1934, New Aluminum Bassinets

"'Who's afraid of the big bad sand man,' coo these new arrivals at Los Angeles County Hospital on February 26, 1934. You see, they're among the first babies in the world to sleep in aluminum bassinets, which entitles them to be just a wee bit cocky, we should say. Heretofore bassinets have weighed in the neighborhood of 15 pounds. These light alloy baby baskets weigh only 7-3/4 pounds each, complete with name plates and safety pin holders, which is a real advantage, according to the nurses who carry them around all day. The aluminum bassinets are safer, possessing no sharp corners for baby to bump his head on, and no open sections for him to shove his tiny fists and feet through. Smooth sides and rounded edges make them easy to keep clean and sanitary. The bassinet cart also is designed along efficiency lines, being constructed chiefly of aluminum tubing."

Photograph caption dated December 4, 1951 reads, "This picture was taken while an actual operation at General Hospital was being televised and viewed in color by 700 doctors at Shrine Auditorium seven miles away. White arrow points to TV camera. Black arrow points to surgery for removal of thyroid gland. The surgeon (front) has a small microphone under his mask and is describing the operation as he works. It is the first such demonstration ever conducted in color in Los Angeles."

1951, Watching Color TV Surgery

Photograph caption dated December 4, 1951 reads, "Medical history is being made in this photo of some of 700 doctors watching a color television screening (arrow) of an actual operation. The surgery was performed at County General hospital. The doctors were seated in the convention hall at Shrine Auditorium, seven miles away. Most of them are taking notes as they watch the screen and listen to the surgeon describe what he is doing while he operates. Doctors here are American Medical Association conference."
